At Hasek's Heroes, student athlete is not a title. It's an identity we build in every child from day one.

We believe the same qualities that make a great student make a great hockey player: discipline, focus, resilience, the ability to take coaching, and the willingness to do the work when no one is watching. We don't separate the student from the athlete. They're the same person and we invest in both.

What a Hasek's Heroes Student Athlete Looks Like

- Shows up prepared — to practice and to school

- Competes hard and studies hard

- Takes feedback and applies it

- Supports teammates on the ice and classmates in the classroom

- Earns recognition through effort and growth, not just talent

This identity doesn't develop by accident. It develops because coaches model it, parents reinforce it, and the program builds systems that reward it every single day. The Gold Room, Study Hours, Hero Bucks, the Book Challenge, and the Student Athlete Awards all exist for one purpose: to make the student athlete identity real and tangible for every kid in this program.

The Gold Room: Where It All Happens

Located upstairs at the rink, the Gold Room is the home of the Hasek's Heroes student athlete experience off the ice.

Study Hours — Dedicated, supervised time before and after practice for homework, school projects, and reading. Coaches and parents are present, and hockey books and creative materials are available. We care about the classroom as much as the ice, and this room proves it.

Coach Time — Once the homework is done, the Gold Room becomes a classroom of a different kind. Video review, chalkboard sessions, and real conversations about the game help players understand the why behind what they do. Players who understand the game at a deeper level are players who execute with confidence.

The Team Store — Once a month, the Gold Room transforms into the Team Store, where players spend or save their Hero Bucks on gear, snacks, collectibles, and more. It's their choice and their money — a real lesson in decision-making, right at the rink.

Hero Bucks: Making Values Visible

Hero Bucks are how we make our values tangible. Players earn them for effort at practice, great sportsmanship, showing up on time, encouraging a teammate, and living out our five core values. Coaches recognize and reward the right behaviors in real time — including in the classroom.

Academic Hero Bucks:

- Report Card Review — Every month, players who bring in their most recent report card to a coach or staff member earn Hero Bucks on Team Store Days. We're not looking for perfection — we're looking for effort, progress, and honesty. A player showing improvement from last month has earned recognition just as much as a player on the honor roll. Show us where you are, and we'll celebrate it.

- Honor Roll Bonus — Players who make honor roll earn Hero Bucks bonus at the time of their report card review, announced and celebrated within the team, because academic achievement deserves the same recognition as a great game.

- Grade Improvement Bonus — Progress is rewarded just as much as achievement. A jump from one grading period to the next earns bonus bucks, every time.

Once earned, Hero Bucks can be spent or saved at the monthly Team Store. Saving teaches patience, goal-setting, and delayed gratification. Spending rewards consistent effort. Both are wins — and our Learn to Skate and Learn to Play kids get in on it too, cashing in Hero Bucks earned from their stamp cards on Cape Day.

The Book Challenge

Reading is one of the most powerful habits we can build in a young person. It builds vocabulary, focus, empathy, and imagination — and it makes better hockey players too, because reading about great athletes, coaches, and teams teaches kids how to think about the game, and about life.

The Book Challenge is open to all players all season long:

1. Choose a book — anything that challenges and engages them.

2. Read it

3. Write a short book report — what the book was about, what they liked or found interesting, one thing they learned, and one thing they'd tell a friend.

4. Submit and earn — every completed book report earns extra Hero Bucks.

End-of-Season Student Athlete Awards

Every season closes with one of the most meaningful events we hold all year: the Student Athlete Awards. These awards make a statement — that academic effort is worth celebrating just as loudly as goals scored and games won. Every player who engaged with the academic side of the program throughout the season is recognized in front of their team, coaches, and families.

The centerpiece of the night is the Kevin Durawa Memorial Award, given to the players who best demonstrates leadership and sportsmanship on the ice while excelling in academics and community involvement off the ice — qualities that reflect the character Kevin embodied and the example we strive to set for our players every day.

All award recipients are recognized publicly at the end-of-season celebration, featured on our website and social channels, and presented with a physical award and a significant Hero Bucks bonus to close out the season in style.

The Word "Student" Comes First on Purpose

At Hasek's Heroes, we don't just develop hockey players. We develop student athletes and student comes first on purpose.

We believe a child who's engaged in school, who reads, who challenges themselves academically, and who takes their education seriously will also be a better teammate, a more coachable player, and a more successful person. The skills required to be a great student and the skills required to be a great athlete are the same skills: discipline, focus, consistency, and the willingness to keep working even when it's hard.

When a child leaves Hasek's Heroes, we want them to carry this identity with them into high school, into college, and into life.
